Kagyu
Monlam
The International Kagyu Monlam is a festive
prayer ceremony dedicated to increasing world peace and harmony. It
is held each year at the Great Stupa under the Maha Bodhi Tree by
the Vajra Seat, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Monlam, which
means Aspiration in Tibetan, is held during the 8th-15th days of the
11th month of the Tibetan calendar. In 1983 Kyabje Dorje Chang Kalu
Rinpoche re-established the tradition, which now hosts over six thousand
ordained monks and nuns and as many as ten thousand pilgrims.
His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Orgyen Trinle Dorje, has presided
over the International Kagyu Monlam since 2001. For more information
