What things are and what things are not.

Dr Andrew McGarrity

Venue: Yeshe Nyima, 49 High St, Harris Park (Parramatta)

Dates February 11 and 12
Time 10.00am-4.00pm Saturday and Sunday

Buddhist terminology can appear to be bound by negative terms.
In this course the meaning and use of such negative terms as non-self, suffering and
emptiness will be explored first from Buddha's discourses and Abhidhama teachings,
before moving on to the analytical approach of the Madhyamaka school, and the
Yogachara understanding of conceptuality. Specific questions will be addressed such
as: what does it mean to know the ultimate nature of things when the ultimate nature
is often described as Emptiness; how is the Buddha said to know the Emptiness of all
things; what is significant about the Buddhist approach to describing "what things are
not" rather than "what they are". This course is suitable for beginners and the more
experienced providing an excellent opportunity to discover how language is used to
uncover the meaning of some of the fundamental concepts in Buddhism.

PRESENTER: DR ANDREW MCGARRITY

Dr Andrew McGarrity is a Lecturer in South Asian and
Indo-Tibetan Studies at the University of Sydney and
has been a Numata Research Fellow at Ryukoku
University in Kyoto. His research and teaching areas are
in Hinduism and Indian and Tibetan Buddhism,

Tibetan language study. Andrew is one of the key
speakers at the 2012 Buddhist Summer School in

Venue: Yeshe Nyima Centre, 49 High Street, Harris Park (Parramatta) NSW

Course Description

Habitual self centeredness, according to Mahayana Buddhism is the root of all our
woes. The teachings of LoJong (Mind Training) show us how to journey from a
narrow, self involved attitude (concerned predominantly with oneself) to an open
and compassionate state of mind that makes others the focus of ones concern. In this
course Norbert will present a commentary on LoJong practises based on Kyabje
Bokar Rinpoche Teachings.

Norbert Bohler

Norbert Bohler has been a Buddhist since 1978 when he took refuge with Tibetan
Buddhist Master Kalu Rinpoche in France. He studied with his principal teacher, the
late Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche from 1991 until Rinpoche’s death 2004. Over the years
Norbert has continued his Buddhist practices and education while working and
raising a family. As well as completing a number of retreats of a few months duration
Norbert also completed a 3 years retreat focusing principally on Kyabe Bokar
Rinpoche's teachings in 2010. Since that time Norbert has lead a number of courses
